About Potty Plant

The Potty Plant is Australia’s first real grass dog toilet. It was created as a natural mess-free solution for dogs without easy garden access. Whether you live in an apartment, work long hours or have a less mobile dog, the Potty Plant will make toileting for your dog easier by bringing the outdoors in.

The Potty Plant comes in two forms. Both options are odour-free, easy to manage, and help eliminate toilet training stress - for both you and your dog.

Potty Plant Go is a hassle-free disposable box delivered to you. Simply open, use, close and dispose. Perfect if you are looking for a temporary solution, prefer the convenience or aren’t ready to commit to the Potty Plant Pro.

Potty Plant Pro is a durable, non-permeable recycled plastic tray which will hold the fresh grass you get delivered by us. It is designed to be reused again and again, while you only change over the grass. Subscribe to regular grass deliveries, and we’ll keep your Potty Plant fresh, green and always ready for action.

Potty Plant Go is a convenient, all-in-one disposable box - recyclable, pee-proof, and 100% hassle-free. There’s no cleaning required: when the grass is ready to be changed, simply toss the whole box and replace it with a new one. Ideal for travel, short-term use, or for those who aren’t ready to commit to the Pro, the Go is a budget-friendly, low-effort option that still brings all the benefits of real grass.

Potty Plant Pro is a durable, reusable recycled plastic tray designed for long-term use. The patented design cleverly stops dogs from nibbling or getting to the grass edges, thanks to its secure top frame. When it’s time to change the grass, roll it up, dispose of it, give the tray a quick wash and place a fresh grass in. The Pro is available in black or white, offering a sleek, modern look that blends seamlessly into your home or balcony. A one-time tray purchase paired with a subscription saves you money in the long run while providing your dog with a consistent, natural toilet. Subscriptions start at $29.95/week, making it a cost-effective and sustainable solution.

The Potty Plant measures W 86.5cm x L 62.5cm x H 6cm.

It is larger and better value than any other solution on the market with the nearest rivals being 25% smaller and 1.5x more expensive.

Yes, the Potty Plant Go box can be placed in your yellow bin (recyclables) or blue bin (cardboard). Please ensure you separate the grass and dispose of it in the general waste bin before recycling the box.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, Potty Plant could be the game changer you are looking for:

Live in an apartment without easy garden access?

Can’t make it home in time to let your dog out?

Deal with frequent dog accidents in the house?

Have a dog that struggles with stairs

Toilet training a puppy?

Caring for an older or injured dog?

Sick of dragging your dog out in the rain to pee and poo

Losing your mind over puppy pads?

Struggling with the lingering pee stench?

Feeling stuck with a puppy that just isn't catching on?

Recently downsized to an apartment with your dog?

Absolutely. The Potty Plant provides a natural grass dog toilet for your older dogs that is easy to access to- especially if they have trouble getting outside due to mobility issues, stairs or incontinence.

To help your older dog get used to peeing on their new toilet, dab a bit of another dog’s pee with a paper towel on the grass. It’s a simple trick that helps signal to your dog that this is their new spot to ‘go’.

Absolutely. Our founder Julia created the Potty Plant to help with the challenges of toilet training her puppy Barney (see also Barney Bed also founded by Julia). Teaching your puppy to only go on real grass sets them up for faster, more consistent toilet training without the confusion of pee pads or synthetic grass which can feel too much like your floors.

Choose Potty Plant Go if you:
  • Need a short-term or travel-friendly option
  • Want something completely disposable with no cleaning required
  • Are just starting out and not quite ready to commit
  • Prefer a lower upfront cost to try it for your dog
  • Want a convenient solution while you test the routine
Choose Potty Plant Pro if you:
  • Want a long-term, sustainable toilet solution
  • Prefer a reusable tray with a sleek, modern look
  • Are happy to do a quick clean between grass changes
  • Prefer to save money over a longer term subscription
  • Want to keep the grass securely in place with a Cage Mat (especially helpful for curious chewers)

Potty Plant helps your puppy build good toilet habits from day one by training them to go on real grass - the same surface you want them to use for life.

Dogs learn toilet training based on the surface they peed and pooped on as puppies. By using real grass (instead of puppy pads or fake turf that can feel like your floors), you’ll fast-track toilet training, reduce confusion, and minimise accidents at home.

It’s a natural, stress-free way to set your puppy up for success - and save yourself a lot of frustration along the way.

Since young puppies can’t be taken outside until they’ve had all their vaccinations, Potty Plant helps your puppy build healthy toilet habits from day one by training them to go on real grass - the same surface they’ll use for life.

Toilet training with Potty Plant can be quick and effective - but like any method, it does require some consistency and effort from you.

The key to success is helping your puppy understand that the Potty Plant is their toilet. The fastest way to do this is by limiting their access to the rest of the house. Use a playpen, crate training, or umbilical cord training (where your puppy is attached to you via a lead) to keep them close and supervised.

This step is essential-even if you had a backyard! Puppies who have free rein of the house before they can hold their bladder will often take much longer to learn.

To help you get started, we’ve created a free, no-fluff Toilet Training Guide that’s packed with practical tips and gets straight to the point.

Don’t worry - some dogs just need a little guidance, especially if they’re older or used to toileting elsewhere.

We recommend a few simple steps to encourage your dog to use the Potty Plant:

  • Limit their options by keeping them in a smaller space with the Potty Plant nearby (use a playpen or baby gate).
  • Reward them immediately with treats and praise every time they use it correctly.
  • Use scent cues - dabbing a bit of another dog’s pee (from a friend or neighbour) onto the grass with a paper towel can help signal that it’s the right spot.
  • Stay consistent - dogs learn best through routine.

We’ve also created a quick-start Toilet Training Guide you can download for free, designed to help your dog transition to real grass with minimal stress.

1. Choose the Right Location

  • by keeping them in a smaller space with the Potty Plant nearby (use a playpen or baby gate).
  • immediately with treats and praise every time they use it correctly.

2. Use a Cue

  • Have treats ready! Praise and reward your dog as soon as they finish using the Potty Plant.
  • Don’t overexcite them as you want toilet time to be a calm experience

3. Reward Immediately

  • When you take your dog to the Potty Plant, use a consistent verbal cue like “pee pee” or “toilet.”
  • Say it as they approach or sniff it, and again as they start to go.

4. Stick to a Routine

  • Guide your dog to the Potty Plant at the usual times they go: first thing in the morning, after meals, before bed, after playing
  • If you catch them sniffing around or showing signs of needing to go, gently lead them to the Potty Plant.

5. Supervise at First

  • Especially for puppies or dogs new to toileting indoors, supervision helps prevent accidents and reinforce the new routine. Use a lead
  • If there's an accident, calmly clean it without scolding-then lead them to the Potty Plant to redirect.

6. Make it Familiar

  • If they’ve peed on another surface (like a pee pad), place a piece of it on the Potty Plant, so the scent helps them understand its purpose. You can also add pee collected from another dog by dabbing the grass with a paper towel.
  • For male dogs, consider adding a “pee post” (like a garden gnome) to encourage marking.

Absolutely. We recommend you change the grass weekly or get two Potty Plants.

Potty Plant is not just for apartment living. While it’s a lifesaver for apartment dwellers, it’s also incredibly useful in many other situations, such as:

Backyards & Homes With Outdoor Access

  • Use it overnight so you don’t have to let your dog out in the middle of the night or during bad weather.
  • Great for puppies who aren’t fully vaccinated yet and can’t go outside. Having a toilet in close proximity to where your puppy will be spending most of their day is necessary.

Busy Families or Working late

  • Ideal when you're at work or running errands - your dog has a clean, natural place to go without holding it in.

Seniors or Dogs With Mobility Issues

  • Easier for older dogs or older people who struggle to get outside quickly or navigate stairs.

Travel and Holidays

  • Take it to an Airbnb, hotel, or a relative’s house, so your dog has a familiar toilet spot wherever you go.

Women Who Don’t Feel Safe Going Outside at Night

  • Many female dog owners love Potty Plant for the peace of mind that comes from staying inside after dark.

Yes, your dog still needs walks, even if you’re using the Potty Plant.

The Potty Plant replaces toileting, not exercise or enrichment.

The Potty Plant is a clean, convenient toilet spot for when:

  • You can’t get outside (late nights, bad weather, early mornings)
  • Your dog is home alone
  • You are toilet training a puppy
  • Your dog is old or recovering from surgery

What walks are for:

  • Physical exercise
  • Mental stimulation
  • Socialisation and bonding
  • Preventing boredom and behavioural issues

The Potty Plant Pro grass subscriptions start from $29.95 per week, and the Potty Plant Go grass subscriptions start from $45 per week.

The Potty Plant latches are designed to fit loosely to accommodate varying thicknesses of grass. Grass varies in thickness due to seasonal changes, and the latches fit loosely around the catch plates (the metal bits attached to the frame) to allow this to happen.

The latches do not open on their own or if your dog bumps them. If you find the latches popping open, please check that your Potty Plant is on a level, flat surface. Do not place your Potty Plant on carpet or an uneven surface.

How does it work?

Potty Plant is a natural, mess-free toilet solution for dogs. Both the Potty Plant Pro and Potty Plant Go feature a secure base to hold our real grass, creating a clean and familiar spot for your dog to go to the toilet.

Set-up is simple:

  • Place your Potty Plant in a shady, sheltered spot like a balcony or courtyard - out of direct sun and rain.
  • No outdoor space? You can use it indoors, just make sure to change the grass weekly.

The real grass naturally absorbs pee and odours, meaning there’s no maintenance required between grass changes - just pick up your dog’s poo like you would at the park.

When it’s time to refresh:

  • With Potty Plant Pro, roll up and dispose of the old grass, give the tray a quick wash, lay down the included liner, and place the fresh grass on top.
  • With Potty Plant Go, simply close up and dispose of the entire used box and grass, and replace it with your new one-no cleaning needed.

Your dog gets a soft, natural place to go (just like at the park), and you get a low-maintenance toilet solution that doesn’t stink up your home.

The best spot for your Potty Plant is on a balcony or courtyard, ideally undercover to protect it from rain and direct sunlight.

If you don’t have access to an outdoor area, you can place it indoors - just keep in mind:

Indoor grass needs to be changed weekly, as it retains more moisture and reaches its pee absorption limit faster than when used outdoors.

Do not water the grass if it's indoors - it already holds enough moisture on its own.

Absolutely. You can place it indoors - just keep in mind:

Indoor grass needs to be changed weekly, as it retains more moisture and reaches its pee absorption limit faster than when used outdoors.

Do not water the grass if it's indoors - it already holds enough moisture on its own.

Yes, you can - but we strongly recommend placing a mat underneath to protect your floors, just in case.

  • The Potty Plant Pro is fully sealed, and the Potty Plant Go is 100% waterproof.
  • However, if your dog accidentally misses the grass, a mat will help catch any spills and keep your carpet or flooring safe.

If you’re using the Potty Plant Pro, we also suggest giving the tray a thorough clean during each grass change - including the bottom.

The best way? A quick rinse on the balcony with a hose, or a wash in the bathtub. Watch how to wash your Potty Plant Pro tray here.

Yes absolutely! Ideally undercover to protect it from rain and direct sunlight. This could be an awning or even under an outdoor table. If you don’t have any cover, you can check out our Canopee - a mini tent to protect your Potty Plant from the sun and the rain.

Yes you can, however the Potty Plant will get water-logged if left in the rain, making changing the grass difficult, heavy and smelly. Too much water can make your Potty Plant stink and your dog won’t want to go near it. Try placing your Potty Plant under an outdoor table or purchase our Canopee to shield it from rain. Another option is to bring it inside during wet weather.

Yes we do. You can purchase the Potty Plant Pro or Potty Plant Go as a one-off order if you are not yet ready to sign up to a subscription.

We only sell grass refills to customers who already have a Potty Plant at home. That’s because the Potty Plant tray is essential to making the system work properly - without it, you’re left with loose grass that can leak, create mess, and get dragged around the house.

Our unique tray design:

  • Secures the grass in place
  • Contains any moisture or odour
  • Prevents dogs from tearing or playing with the grass

We’ve tested the Potty Plant system 100’s of thousands of times over the last 10 years, and the success rates for toilet training and long-term use are unmatched-when used with the tray.

If you’re purchasing grass under a different name than your original order, or didn’t buy your starter kit from us, please leave a note at checkout or email us after placing your order. This helps us avoid delays and confirm you're set up for success.

If you would like to trial the Potty Plant, we recommend placing a one-off order for the Potty Plant Go.

No, you can cancel at any time!

All subscription renewal payments are taken on Wednesdays, the week prior to your scheduled delivery.

The ideal frequency depends on your dog’s size, how often they use the Potty Plant, and where it's placed. Here’s a quick guide:

Weekly Grass Change Recommended If:

  • Your Potty Plant is kept indoors
  • You have a puppy
  • You have a large dog (over 15kg)
  • Multiple dogs are sharing one Potty Plant
  • Your dog uses it for all their daily pees

Every 2–3 Weeks Might Suit You If:

  • You have a medium dog (10–15kg)
  • Your Potty Plant is kept outside
  • Your dog uses it just 1–2 times per day

Every 3–4 Weeks Could Work If:

  • You have a small dog (1–10kg)
  • Your Potty Plant is outside
  • It’s used just once or twice a day

Still unsure? It’s always better to start with weekly grass and adjust based on how quickly it’s being used. You can easily change your delivery frequency anytime.

Special Soil contains pee-absorbing and odour-neutralising ingredients, as well as grass nutrients, which help manage absorption and control smells. It’s perfect for dog owners looking to get an extra week out of their grass, especially if you have a large dog or keep the Potty Plant indoors. One bag is enough for two grass changes, simply scatter half of the bag on the liner, then place the grass on top.

Grass Food, on the other hand, contains nutrients that feed your grass and help it stay fresh for longer. It comes in a sachet that you dissolve in water and spray directly onto the grass every 2–3 days. Grass Food is ideal for keeping your grass healthy and vibrant, extending its life and helping it grow.

Your puppy should always be under your supervision. This can be achieved by using a lead at home. Actively taking your puppy to the toilet by the lead serves two purposes:

  • Puppy can’t dig the grass much because you are there to stop them.
  • You can ensure puppy does a pee/poo on the Potty Plant and stop them walking off when they haven’t done their business yet, as well as, being there to praise puppy once they use it to pee/poo correctly.

Here are some important points to remember:

  • Only allow your puppy access to the toilet when they actually need to go. After eating, waking up, playing, drinking.
  • Stop your puppy every time they try to destroy it, just like you would if they were chewing on your shoe. Deter, distract - whatever you need to do.
  • Use a lead at home to tether your puppy to the leg of a chair next to you so you can keep an eye on your puppy at all times. Just remember to take your puppy to the Potty Plant regularly by the lead so he is not forced to pee/poo in the wrong spot.
  • If you need to leave your puppy alone during the day in his playpen, you can purchase the Cage Mat and use it only when you are not home, as sometimes the cage mat can put some puppies (not all) off using the Potty Plant.

Watch this video about how to use the Cage Mat with your Potty Plant, and follow us on Instagram, as we always share lots of helpful information and videos to assist with training.

Our grass

Dogs instinctively know to toilet on real grass - it’s what nature intended. That’s why using real grass makes toilet training faster, easier, and far less confusing than using puppy pads or artificial turf. The natural scent of the grass attracts puppies to pee in the right spot, helping them learn faster and with fewer accidents.

Real grass also absorbs urine and odours, unlike fake grass or puppy pads. That means your home stays fresh, and your dog always has a clean, hygienic toilet spot - just like being outside, but better because of how convenient it is.

Our grass comes from family run farms in Sydney and Brisbane.

Absolutely. Our grass is fresh, natural, and cleaner than most grass you'll find at the local park.

We understand that many new puppies need to stay home until they’ve had all their vaccinations. Potty Plant provides a safe way for them to experience real grass without the risks of outdoor exposure before they are ready.

You can feel confident knowing your dog is using a hygienic surface that’s gentle on paws and designed just for them.

Yes, our grass is free from harmful chemicals, and we never use dyes to colour it. Like all natural grass, it may be treated with standard fertilisers to support healthy growth, but we maintain strict control to ensure it's safe for pets.

Each delivery includes your fresh grass, a liner, and a pair of disposable gloves. After cleaning your Potty Plant Pro, simply place the liner in the tray and lay the fresh grass on top. The gloves are included to help keep your hands clean during the changeover. You can use the cardboard box to carry the used grass to your garbage bin for easy disposal.

The weight of the grass fluctuates between 5-9kgs. It is heaviest in winter and wet months due to excess moisture.

Potty Plant grass only comes in one size. Your grass is the correct size, but it looks smaller at first glance because it is folded in half. Watch this video to see how to change your grass.

The grass is not meant to stay green. It is cut off from its root supply so it can’t get nutrients once it is harvested and gradually starts to die while it’s in the Potty Plant. The great thing about the grass is that it is highly absorbent to pee and pee odours, no matter the colour.

It is not intended to stay green, as dog pee is also highly acidic and ‘burns’ it. Dogs don’t mind using it as a toilet once it starts to discolour. As you may notice they are fond of peeing on dirt, bark, mud etc at the park. So the benefit of having the grass for your dog to pee on, regardless of the colour, is that it absorbs the pee and pee odours.

The most common cause of odour is overwatering or rain exposure. We recommend misting the grass lightly with a spray bottle every few days in summer, and not watering it at all during colder months. Overwatering can reduce the grass’s ability to absorb pee.

Another reason could be that your dog needs more frequent grass changes. Check out our question, What frequency do I need? To choose the best subscription for your dog.

If your Potty Plant is kept indoors, you may notice a smell after a week. Weekly grass changes are recommended for indoor use.

Watering Guidelines:

  • Cold Months: No watering is needed unless you're on a monthly subscription. In that case, mist lightly with a spray bottle once a fortnight.
  • Warm Months: Mist every 2–3 days using a spray bottle. Avoid overwatering, as it reduces the grass’s ability to absorb urine.

Care Tips:

  • Keep your Potty Plant out of direct sunlight and out of the rain.
  • The grass is a toilet, not a pot plant - it’s designed to absorb acidic pee. It may lose its lush green look after a few days, but it will still work effectively.
  • We sell Grass Food in our online shop to help nourish your grass. Just empty the sachet into a 500ml spray bottle and mist as needed.
  • Winter Notes: During winter, it’s normal for the grass to discolour and turn yellow due to frost. This does not mean the grass is dead - only the blades are affected, not the roots. Your dog will continue to use the grass as usual, as dogs are comfortable toileting on bark, leaves, and other natural surfaces regardless of colour. Because this seasonal change impacts our entire crop between June and late September, Potty Plant does not offer refunds or replacements for winter grass.

Special Soil contains pee absorbing and odour neutralising ingredients. If you have a large dog that pees a lot or your Potty Plant is kept indoors, and you find your grass is starting to smell before your next grass replacement arrives, we recommend trying our Special Soil.

One bag of Special Soil is enough for two grass replacements. Simply scatter half of the bag onto the liner, underneath your grass, and pop the grass on top.

Yes. It is extremely important to take your grass out of the box as soon as you can. The grass has been freshly harvested and packed into your box but will only survive the few days we have allocated to travel to you. Leaving your grass in the box will cause it to sweat and spoil. Potty Plant will not replace any grass that has been damaged due to prolonged time in the box.

We created a video to show you how to change your grass, you can watch this here.

You can dispose of your used grass in the general waste bin, before recycling the box in either your yellow bin (recyclables) or blue bin (cardboard).

If you are on our Premium Service, we will dispose of the grass for you.

The Potty Plant Go box can be placed in your yellow bin (recyclables) or blue bin (cardboard). Please ensure you separate the grass and dispose of it in the general waste bin before recycling the box.

Toilet training

Every puppy is different, but with consistent training, most customers report success within just a few weeks. However, it’s important to understand that the Potty Plant is a tool, not a magic fix. Just like having a backyard won’t toilet train your puppy, neither will the Potty Plant without your effort and consistency.

Toilet training takes patience, structure, and boundaries. As Amy from Amy’s Puppy School says, “Giving your puppy access to the whole house is like not putting a nappy on an 11-month-old and expecting it to go to the toilet in the right spot.” Crate training and playpens are not cruel - they are essential puppy training tools when used correctly. They help set your puppy up for success, as long as they are introduced gradually and never used as punishment. Getting frustrated with your puppy for peeing in the wrong place, without teaching them where to go, is unfair. It's not your puppy’s fault!

Take the time to research and stay consistent, and if you’re still finding it challenging, consider booking a session with a qualified dog trainer - one session can make a big difference and help set your puppy up for long-term success.

Lots! To help you get started, we’ve created a free, no-fluff Toilet Training Guide that’s packed with practical tips and gets straight to the point.

We also created a series of videos to help toilet train your puppy.

Introduce your puppy to the Potty Plant in a calm, safe environment. Take them to it on a lead regularly - especially after meals, naps, and playtime, when they’re most likely to need to go. Give them plenty of chances to succeed, and reward them with praise when they use it correctly. Consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement are key to building good toilet habits.

Start by identifying where your puppy is currently peeing. If they’re toileting on your floors, it’s time to go back to toilet training basics. Take your puppy to the Potty Plant regularly - especially after meals, naps, and play, and always on a lead at first. This helps them associate the grass with toilet time. Be patient and consistent, and with time and routine, they’ll learn to use it reliably.

Start by taking your dog to the Potty Plant on a lead when you know they need to go - such as first thing in the morning, after a nap, or when you return home. This helps them associate the grass with toilet time. Over time, they’ll begin to use it on their own.

If your dog is already used to peeing on real grass, the transition is usually quick and easy, since the scent and texture are familiar - just like the park. However, if your dog is used to synthetic grass or pee pads, you may need to take a few steps back and re-train with consistency and patience. If you need any advice, please get in touch with us and we can certainly help!

Yes, you can! While adult dogs sometimes take a little longer to adjust to new habits, transitioning them to the Potty Plant is definitely possible. The ease of the transition depends on where your dog is currently toileting.

If your dog is used to peeing on real grass, the transition should be quick and easy since the scent and texture are similar to the grass at the park. However, if they’re accustomed to synthetic grass or pee pads, you may need to go back to basics with some extra training, consistency, and patience.

To help encourage them, try placing a little of their own pee on the grass or invite a dog friend over to show them how it’s done. A bit of reassurance and familiar scent can go a long way in helping them feel comfortable with the new routine.

Yes you do! The Potty Plant is not a substitute for walking your dog, it is simply a place for them to toilet.
